Lab Access: $60 Top

To gain access to the computer graphics labs, each user must obtain a Photo-ID card from the Photo-ID Office located at 110 Cesar Chavez Center, Lower Sproul Plaza. If you have a Photo-ID which was obtained before 8/18/03 please return it for one of the new cards which can be activated for door entry. Take your new Photo-ID to 477 Wurster to be activated. All Fees must be paid with either a personal check or money order--cash cannot be accepted.

Lab users must be currently registered Berkeley students. When establishing a new computer account, please bring your Cal student ID card for proof of registration. The CPLA Labs and Architecture Shop require the same Cardkey to open the doors to the labs, but additional fees apply. Card keys usually require five business days to be activated by the UC Police Department, but the Novell computer account can be created and used immediately.

Old Cardkeys can be returned to room 477 Wurster for a refund ($15), or can be reactivated if you choose to not upgrade to the new Photo-ID cards. Refund processing can take several weeks to several months as it is processed directly by the University. There is no charge for upgrading to the new Photo-ID cards at this time if you take in your old ID card.

Computer Use Policies Top

1.

You are not allowed to share computer accounts, passwords, or cardkeys.

2. All lab facilities are provided for UC instructional use only.

3. No food or drink is to be consumed in the labs at any time.

4. Do not bring bicycles into the labs.

5. Propping open lab doors is not allowed.

6. When you open a computer account part of your fees are credited towards printing costs. If you exceed your printing allotment you may add to your account at 477 Wurster. Checks or money orders only please.

7. Only supplied paper is to be used in printers. Use of reused paper, or any form of transparency material is forbidden and may damage printers.

8. Any damage to printers or computer equipment through improper use will be charged to user.

9. You are allowed 500 megabytes of space in your home (G:drive) directory. We suggest keeping 20% of your 500 MB quota free, as many of the modeling and imaging applications use portions of this 500 MB as swap space and scratch disk. If you are approaching the 500 MB quota or have exceeded it, you may have problems saving files and potentially suffer a loss of data. This server space is provided as a working space for students, staff, and faculty. As such, this service is provided in recognition of the need for a temporary working space and storage space for projects, data, and other files during the semester. Because data backup is not performed on student folders, all data and files residing on the CED servers should be personally backed up and archived.

10. Any personal files left on lab or studio machines are subject to removal at any time. No warnings will be given before deletion. You are responsible for your own backups...

11. The Transfer drive (T:drive) is for the temporary storage and transfer of files. Any file older than 24 hours may be removed with no warning given.

12. Log off and clean up around your workstation before you leave the labs.

13. You may not lock workstations.

14 Do not try to add software, or alter in any way lab workstations, cabling, or other lab equipment.

15. Do not interfere with the work of other students or classes in session.

Printing & Plotting   (*instructions below) Top

Architecture Printers
There are 2 color plotters (HP DesignJet 1050C Plus) in Wurster: one located in Lab 479, and the second on the 8th floor studio. They are available for any CED student with a valid computing account.

There are 3 color tabloid size (11X 17) laser printers (HP LaserJet 5500). They are located in Lab 479, the 9th floor studio, and the 8th floor studio.

There are also two letter size color laser printers (HP LaserJet 4600) located in the 7th floor studio and the 6th floor studio. The 3 LaserJet 5500s can also print letter size color.

Only provided paper is to be used in these printers. Any damage caused by paper or materials not provided by the college will be charged to the user.

$17.50 for printing is credited to each account at the creation of that account. Printing costs are automatically subtracted from your account as you print. You can view your current balance by clicking on the P-counter icon in lower right corner of the desktop (black $ sign). Account balances can be added at any time for the purpose of continued printing. Alternatively, students can check account balances by right-clicking on the red N in the system tray. Scroll to "User Administrator for CED-TREE", and click on "Login Account Information." Your print credit is displayed under "Account Balance" in cents (e.g. "5416" indicates an amount of $54.16 in your print account).

Your account balance can be increased at any time by payment at the Cardkey office (477 Wurster). All payments must be in the form or check or money order, payable to the UC Regents.

You must choose to print in Greyscale/Black&White or Color, (found in the Properties button of the selected printer) or you will be charged for Color by default.

Printer Prices

Size Black/White Color
Tabloid (11 x 17) $0.14 $0.28
Letter (8.5 x 11) $0.07 $0.14
Plotters (HP 1050C plus) $1.00 sq/ft $1.50 sq/ft

Printing and Plotting Instructions:
Access to the printers and plotters is through the network. You can print directly from your desktop machine (wirelessly) or from the machines in the labs and studios.

If you are printing from the departmental machines in the lab or studio it is already configured to print. If you want to print from your own machine wirelessly use the following instructions to install the printers:

1. Windows machines: Wireless Printing Setup for PCs

2. For Macintosh machines with OS X: Wireless Printing Setup for Macs

Use the following plotting instructions for plotting to the CED plotters. Instructions for document setup (in Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.), and print properties setup are very important for successful plots:

1. PLOTTING INSTRUCTIONS: an A through Z walkthrough of how to setup the plotting properties in five minutes or less.

2. PLOTTING DO's AND DON'Ts: things you should do, and the things you definitely should not do when it comes to plotting.

Do not under any circumstances attach your machine directly to the plotters. Circumventing the printing accounting and tampering with the equipment will result in the revocation of your computing rights and departmental censure.

Why do I get a FATAL ERROR message when I try to open Autocad?

back

Most likely, this is a problem with your Windows NT Profile.  You can fix the problem by deleting or renaming the Windows NT Workstation Profile folder in your G:\ drive.  However, you cannot be logged in when you do this.  The way around this is:
1. Have someone else log in.
2. Right click on the Novell icon (big red N) in the lower right corner of the screen.
3. Choose "Netware Login."
4. Log in as yourself.
5. You will now be able to see your G:\ drive.  Delete or rename the Windows NT 4.0 Workstation Profile folder.
6. Repeat steps 2-4 to log in the original user.
7. Log in to a new machine, not the one you had trouble with . The computer will build a new profile for you and this should fix the problem.
If the monitor office is open you can ask them to clear your profile... you must be logged off for them to do this.

Why can't I see any of the PRINTERS in any program?

back

There can be several causes for getting a error message saying you do not have any printers installed...

All our lab machines have lab printer drivers installed. But some times one of two things can happen. The most common problem is that the print spool service has failed to start automatically on the computer you are working on. The cure for this is to reboot the machine.

The second possible cause for getting this error message is a corruption in your Windows profile on the network. See instructions below for directions on fixing this problem.

You can fix the problem by deleting or renaming the Windows NT Workstation Profile folder in your G:\ drive. However, you cannot be logged in when you do this. The way around this seemingly paradoxical situation is the following:
7. Log in to a new machine. The computer will build a new profile for
you.

Why
can't I find a specific program in the START MENU
?

back

The shortcut for the program has probably not been updated. You can find the program either by opening the C: drive and looking in the program files folder, or you can use the find program located in the start menu. If you still cannot find the program, try another computer. Please alert the Tech Support office if this is the case. We try to have a consistent "look" to the lab computers but sometimes a machine will swapped out for repairs or updating and will not have the same configuration as other lab machines.

What if m
y FILES ARE TOO LARGE to store in my home directory?

back

The best thing to do is to save your files to a zip disk or to a CD. However, if you do not have either of these on hand, you can save large files temporarily in other drives.  Be aware, however, that files in the temporary drives can be viewed AND DELETED by any user.

Why CAN'T I
LOG IN?

back

Check the Advanced button on the Novell login screen. Sometimes the context gets set to STAFF or FACULTY. Change the context back to STUDENT to log in. If this is not the solution, try the Novell login a few more times. Occasionally, the program is just cranky. If this does not work either, it is possible that the computer crashed last time you logged off. This will prevent you from logging on again for up to two hours. If the tech support office is open, request to have your account temporarily disabled to clear you out of the system. If the tech support office is not open, wait a few minutes and try logging in again. Also you may contact the ced_computing_help@lists.berkeley.edu and by supplying your Novell login name and asking to have the account disabled and enabled. Another problem may be that the network cables have worked loose or been disconnected from the back of the computers. Check to see if your computer is connected.

Why doesn't my USB thumb-drive show up?

back

Generally, USB thumb-drives and USB memory sticks have no problems being auto-detected by our Windows workstations. However, USB thumb-drives with security software on them will not be detected and recognized by our Windows workstations. The reason for this is because USB thumb-drives with security software require administrative access to the computer before allowing themselves to be auto-detected and mounted as a volume. Therefore, unless the thumb-drive is personally installed onto a workstation by a lab monitor with administrative access, it will not work.  Alternatively, the security software can be manually removed, which typically requires a reformat of the thumb-drive.

What are the functions of all these lettered drives?

back

C: Local All application files are stored in this drive in the "Program Files" folder.
  • To avoid corrupting the application files, DO NOT erase files from or save files to this drive.
  • If you do store files on this drive, they will be deleted without notice.
  • If you cannot find a shortcut to a particular application in the start menu, you can launch the application from the Program Files folder.
G: Network Home directory
  • Your allotted storage space on the server via your home directory is 100MB.
  • If you exceed the 100MB limit, applications will crash, and it is likely your Windows NT Profile will be corrupted.
  • Eudora folder is stored here.
  • Files will never be deleted from this drive without notice.
T: Network Transfer drive
  • You can use this drive when you need to transfer files from one user to another.
  • You can use this drive when you are transferring files larger than 100MB from a zip disk to a CD, if you are not on a machine with both drives.
  • Do not store files in this drive for other means than transferring. Files are deleted daily without notice. The only exception is for instructors who are sharing files with students.
F: Network Applications
  • Contains some applications that might be useful such as Premier 5.1 and QuickTime. Find them in the Program Files folder in this drive.
Q: Network File storage
  • File space for Classes.
